Calling for Assange to return home

Put Tuesday next week in your diary for a big legal fight as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange makes his last-ditch appeal in the UK’s High Court to prevent his extradition to the US. This week, Aussie MPs voted on a motion calling on the UK and US to release him – it was passed late on Wednesday with 86 in favour and 42 against. The Coalition – minus Tassie MP Bridget Archer – voted against the motion, but Independent MP Andrew Wilkie still described the vote as “an unprecedented show of political support for Mr Assange”. Assange is wanted on long-running espionage charges in the US for publishing classified government documents in 2010 and 2011. If he’s found guilty, he could face 175 years in prison. PM Albanese is one who wants to get Assange home – last year, during his state visit to the US, he appealed directly to President Biden, to no avail.
