One of the most powerful storms in the region’s history has hit Myanmar and Bangladesh, although officials are relieved it didn’t directly hit the Rohingya refugee settlement in Cox’s Bazar. Cyclone Mocha smashed the coast with winds of more than 200km/hr, causing at least 6 deaths, 700 injuries and knocking out communications systems. That’s made it difficult for officials to assess the extent of the damage. So far, all of the reported deaths have been in Myanmar, with Bangladesh’s emergency chief Kamrul Hasan saying that Mocha caused “no major damage” in his country. In the days before the cyclone made landfall, Myanmar’s local Red Cross was gearing up for a major emergency response in the region, and more than 750,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas.
