Former US President Donald Trump’s appearance before a courthouse in Washington DC is ready to roll at 6am eastern Aussie time this morning… Legal eagles are closely watching the manoeuvring from both sides, with one of Trump’s lawyers already pushing back against the idea it will be a “speedy trial”. John Lauro says it will be “one of the biggest cases in US history”, and it mightn’t be possible to wrap it up before the November 2024 presidential election. If convicted, Trump could face 20 years in prison for charges including conspiracy to defraud the nation. His team also wants to move the trial out of the Democrat-friendly capital to more politically neutral ground. Proving Trump knew he was lying when he claimed the election was stolen is a significant challenge for prosecutors.
