Harsh punishment in Iran
The first death sentence linked to the recent nationwide anti-government protests has been issued. To recap: there have been massive protests across Iran after the death of 22yo Mahsa Amini while in custody after morality police said she wasn’t wearing her head covering properly. Now, an unnamed protestor has been convicted by a Tehran court for setting fire to a government facility and found guilty of “enmity against God” and “spreading corruption on Earth”. Human rights groups believe it’s the start of what’s to come and expect authorities to carry out “hasty executions” on other convicts. Keep in mind that the UN estimates 14,000 people have been arrested over the demonstrations… Most of Iran’s politicians have demanded the execution of those who “have harmed people’s lives and property”. Amnesty International says Iran ranks second in the world for the death penalty, behind China.
