The NATO western military alliance says it continues to see Russian troops massing on the Ukraine border rather than pulling back as claimed by President Putin yesterday. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that Russia’s assertiveness had become “the new normal” for Europe. As a result, NATO commanders are being told to figure out how to deploy troops to new locations in central and south-eastern countries like Romania, which are closer to the Russian border. Yesterday US President Joe Biden said that an invasion is “still very much a possibility“. He also welcomed Russia’s commitment to more talks, saying he wanted to “give the diplomacy every chance” to prevent an invasion. Ukraine Government says the country’s 2 largest banks and the Defence Ministry are among a number of institutions that have been hacked in the country’s worst-ever cyber-attack. Russia has denied involvement.
