Sunak is the UK’s new PM
Former Chancellor (aka Treasurer) Rishi Sunak will be sworn in as the UK’s new PM later today after former PM Boris Johnson and minister Penny Mordaunt declared themselves out of the running. It’ll make Sunak the UK’s first British Asian prime minister, the first Hindu to hold the office, and at 42yo, he’s the youngest national leader in more than 200 years. Telling Conservative MPs that they need to “unite or die” after months of instability, Sunak says he will serve with “integrity and humility, and I will work day in, day out, to deliver for the British people.” He’ll need to because there are some challenges… Oxford and Stanford educated, Sunak worked at fancy bank Goldman Sachs before entering politics in 2015. He’s married to the daughter of one of India’s best-known businessmen, and in short, he’s rich. Labour, the Scottish National Party, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens are continuing their calls for a fresh election.
