US missionaries kidnapped in Haiti

Seventeen US missionaries were kidnapped by a gang yesterday, reports say. The group includes children, and while the details are murky, it’s believed they were leaving an orphanage when they were ambushed. Haiti has been considered dangerous for years, but law and order in the troubled Caribbean nation have broken down as the recent political turmoil deepens. You’ll remember that President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in July, and the nation was rocked by a devastating earthquake in August. That has led to a surge in violence with reports estimating that gangs control roughly half of the capital of Port-au-Prince. US officials have not commented on reports of the kidnapping.
