Disney on top but still in the red
Disney is continuing to make ground in the battle of the streamers, adding more than 12 million Disney+ subscribers in the September quarter. The company now has more than 235 million subscribers across its offerings, including Hulu and ESPN and is now pulling ahead of rival Netflix with 223 million users. All the capital Disney’s dedicating to developing its streaming services means it has yet to turn a profit, posting a US$1.5 billion loss last quarter. Disney boss Bob Chapek says the company has reached a “turning point” and is on track to turn a profit by 2024 after upping the price for its regular offering (which will happen next month) while launching a cheaper subscription offer with ads soon. Having a large collection of movies featuring People Magazine’s highly sought-after man can’t hurt, either… As for other tech giants, Meta has become the latest to flag big job cuts with 13% of its workforce to go as a result of faltering revenue.
