Star boss steps down
An ongoing review by NSW’s gaming regulator into the suitability of Sydney’s Star Casino to retain its gaming license claimed its first casualty yesterday with the resignation of CEO Matt Bekier. The inquiry follows a Sydney Morning Herald/60 Minutes investigation that claimed the company facilitated money laundering, fraud and other criminal activity at its casinos in Sydney, Brissie and the Goldie. Public hearings into the Sydney casino’s operations this month have heard damning evidence backing up some of those allegations. Last week, it heard Bekier rejected a 2018 audit concluding the company was failing to tackle money laundering at its casinos. Now he’s gone, telling Star’s board the buck stopped with him on “the company’s processes, policies, people and culture”. The inquiry is due to report on 30 June.
