Olympics opener a smash

Aussies were keen to see the Tokyo Olympic Games officially kick off on Friday night – like, really keen… Scoring the biggest TV audience of the year with more than 2.7 million people tuning in to Network Seven, the ceremony outperformed the last 2 Games in Rio and London. We’re just speculating, but having 13 million Aussies in lockdown might have contributed to the focused attention… And when it comes to the pre-Games events, a whopping 7.8 million people tuned in between Wednesday and Friday night. Not digging it – US audiences. A 36% audience fall for the opening ceremony compared to the Rio Games in 2016 was recorded. Experts say they expect NBC, the dominant broadcaster of the Games, to see reduced audiences across the event, which could see it compensating advertisers. The major concern of TV audiences: they don’t much like that there’s no crowd at the venues. Oh, the irony…
