Erdoğan wins re-election

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will enter his third decade of rule in Turkey after winning the run-off presidential election overnight against challenger Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Votes are still being counted, but as of early this morning Erdoğan claimed victory after leading the tally all night. Despite the win, the campaign has seen the most significant electoral challenge to Erdoğan’s long rule following enormous economic pressures, including a peak inflation rate last year of 85%. Kılıçdaroğlu was promising to fix Turkey’s economy and to restore democracy, with international human rights watchers saying that Erdoğan controls close to 90% of Turkish media and has eroded many freedoms. In his own election night speech, Kılıçdaroğlu didn’t explicitly admit defeat and called the election unfair. Erdoğan will remain in office for another 5 years…
