To say many people are keen to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth would be the understatement of the year… In Edinburgh, “many tens – possibly even hundreds – of thousands of people” have attempted to file past her coffin in St Giles’ Cathedral. And authorities in London are said to be preparing for 750,000-1 million hopefuls. The problem is Westminster Hall – where the Queen’s coffin will arrive after a procession from Buckingham Palace overnight – can accommodate just 350,000 people over the 4 days before her funeral. And those allowed to join the queue can expect to line up for 17-35 hours. Security concerns across the week mean 10,000 police officers will be on duty every day in London with experts claiming it will be “the biggest policing operation that UK policing has ever dealt with”.
